Amadou Scatrred Janneh has deplored the timing of his arrest leading to charges preferred against him at the Brikama Magistrates Court. Speaking to this paper over the weekend, Mr.Jannah narrated how he was picked up from a cemetery while attending a funeral rite.
He said the Police had all the time since March to effect his arrest for what he termed his right as a citizen to protest in an issue that poses environmental hazard to the community he lives.
It could be recalled that in April, Dr.Janneh with some members of the Gunjur community wrenched the pipes which according to them exposed toxic waste thereby killing fishes in the sea and at the same time polluting the beach and the environment.
Golden Lead, a Chinese Food Company has previously run into trouble with the Gambia Armed Forces for illegally fishing in Gambian territorial waters. Dr.Janneh said it is their right to protest against the environmental hazard being caused by Golden Lead.
Asked if there is no political motive behind the arrest, Dr.Janneh said they will stand their grounds at the courts adding that they have not done any wrong and that the charges against them don’t hold water.
Dr Janneh, who had since been released on bail in the sum of D500, 000 Dr.Janneh is being charged with willful damage to property, conspiracy and criminal trespass
